The 1960 Harmony Stella entered my life for next to nothing, through Scolopendra — but before that, it arrived through a journey.
Scolopendra is one of those mythical places that doesn’t need to explain itself. Extraordinary guitars resting there with total nonchalance, as if it were perfectly normal to stumble upon instruments that elsewhere would live behind glass. No emphasis, no staging: you walk in, you look, you play. That’s it.
And then, as if it were the most natural thing in the world, hot tortellini in broth. A real pause. A necessary one.
That trip mattered for another reason too. It had been a long time since we had truly talked — together, without distractions. The road, the guitars, the warm food. Sometimes that’s all it takes to realign things.
The Stella did the rest.
Yes, it’s an iconic guitar — Cobain’s Stella, Polly. But reducing it to that image would be unfair. This guitar had a life before, and it will have another after. Cobain simply made it visible.
Today I play it in open G, with a slide. The sound is dry, direct, unprotected. A voice that doesn’t try to please. Every note stays exactly where it lands. Every vibration tells something you can’t smooth out.
This Stella carries a clear, previous history. And it’s not alone: alongside it are other guitars I’ll share — instruments you don’t really buy, you pass through. That’s where the idea of being a custodian comes in.
Being a custodian doesn’t mean owning a guitar forever.
It means knowing it doesn’t belong to you, that you’re only one of its passages. A custodian doesn’t correct, tame, or force improvement. He keeps it alive.
I’m not the owner of this Harmony Stella. I’m the one who, for a stretch of the road — between a shop full of incredible guitars, a bowl of tortellini, and a conversation finally resumed — keeps it in tune and lets it speak.
And when the time comes, knows how to let it go.
